Katipunan, Zamboanga del Norte— This municipality, known for its historical value and tourism potentials, celebrated its 106th founding anniversary on January 29 to February 2, 2020 with the theme: “Panaghiusa Alang sa Kalinaw ug Kalamboan”.
Various activities were lined up for the 5-day celebration which was opened by a kick-off parade around the town on January 29, 2020 participated in by the local officials, different agencies, fraternities and sororities and the general public.
The opening program was held at the Municipal Plaza Outdoor Stage followed by a ribbon cutting for the opening of booths for the annual Agro-Trade Fair led by Mayor Patchito T. Eguia together with Vice Mayor Teresita P. Matildo, the local officials and heads of different agencies and was highlighted by a Cheerleading competition naming Katipunan National High School Senior Pep Squad as the champion. Mayor Eguia stated that this year’s festivity aimed to uplift the image of the municipality as agriculture-based producer, which is its main economic driver, to be also a tourist destination for it has a great potential in the tourism industry. This, is most likely to happen when the government is hand-in-hand with the townsfolk in promoting peace and progress in the tourism-potential locations of the municipality.
An invitational Street Dance competition was one of the highlights on the opening night with eight (8) participating groups coming from different places all over Zamboanga Peninsula and Dumaguete City. Unknown Family of Zamboanga City was declared as the champion, Skip Family of Dumaguete City as the first runner up and The Legacy of Dapitan City as the second runner up.
The search for the Bb. Katipunan 2020 Talent Night was also a highlight that night showcasing the talents of the ten (10) lovely candidates vying for the crown.
The following day, a Bulilit Variety Show was presented at the Outdoor Stage which was highlighted by the search for Little Miss Katipunan 2020 participated in by seventeen (17) cute and charming daycare pupils from different day care centers within the municipality. These young partakers were happily showcasing their talents and wit as they gracefully represented their respective centers. Ms. Samantha Nicole Flores from Barangay San Vicente was crowned as the Little Miss Katipunan, Ms. Leona Jenne Bantilan Ello of San Antonio as first runner up and Celine Zar Sotto Pumicpic of barangay Tuburan was the second runner-up.
Katipuneros (popularly called to the people of Katipunan) are known to be sports-oriented and competitive. The reasons why the 5-day celebration was as well hyped-up with various sports competitions. An inter-agency volleyball competition (women) was held on the same day which was played between five (5) competing agencies namely: Local Government Unit (LGU), DepEd Katipunan I and II Districts, Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) and National Government Agencies (NGAs). The fierce women from the ABC bagged the championship followed by the DepEd Katipunan I District and LGU who settled for bronze.
A few hours after exerting their physical athleticism, the different participating agencies then delighted the viewing public at the Municipal Gymnasium by their litheness and jive during the Variety Show on the night of the second day’s series of activities.
The third day was graced by a Fun Run joined by 591 runners who put out their utmost physical agility to reach the finish line. Meanwhile, the whole day was consumed for number of activities such as MAPEH Day for the students, Farm Family Day and Laro ng Lahi for the participating townsfolk from different barangays of the municipality. A foam party and disco delighted the party goers later at night.
Various sports competitions were held in different venues around the town on the fourth day. An invitational motocross/circuit was one of the highlights for it has invited competing individuals from all over Mindanao. There was also a Barangay Fire Olympics which was participated in by barangay councils. The barangay council of Dr. Jose Rizal was held as the champion of the said event followed by the councils of Barangays Dos and Uno as first and second runners-up.
But the most awaited part of that day was the coronation night of the Search for Binibining Katipunan 2020. The ten (10) candidates were judged accordingly by their beauty, grace and wit, for their talents were already been judged on the opening night. Ms. Ashley Nicole R. Epo who represented DepEd Katipunan I District was hailed as the new queen, followed by Ms. Rechelle Mae H.Baculad of the Local Government Unit and Ms. Berlet G.Mondoy of the DepEd Katipunan II District as first and second runners-up, respectively.
On the exact day of the 106th Founding Anniversary which was February 2, a thanksgiving mass was offered to hearken back the wonderful years. A turn-over ceremony on the Community Fish Landing Facility Project from Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) was held afterwards. The culmination program was done at the Outdoor Stage and a Pista sa Nayon was an addition to the festivity of the moment.
The first-time invitational motor show was held at the Municipal Plaza Kiosk showcased by a number of participants from all around the region.
Later that night, a Foam Party and Disco at the Municipal Plaza and a Night to Remember at the Municipal Gymnasium were done wrapping-up the 5-day celebration of the 106th Founding Anniversary of Katipunan.
As a new decade has come, the municipality is ready to embrace the progress it has to conquer in few years time. Having enthusiastic and mindful set of local officials with the support from the different agencies and the commitment of the locals to execute positive counterpart on the effort of the government, Katipunan is envisioned to fonder more in the years to come.
